Medical leeches: Hirudo Medicinalis and Verbana
The leech therapy like all medical treatment's got some side effects. These side effects are usually harmless and occur only for a short period of time.
What medical leeches do?
As leeches suck the blood they release certain chemicals via their saliva that deliver the main therapeutic of hirudotherapy also blood thinning to keep the blood flowing easily, improving circulation, immune regulation. Leechs saliva contains a number of different subtances, including hirudin, calin, anaesthetic compounds and anthihistamine vasodilators. Hirudin is a potent anticoagulant that inhibits the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin - preventing blood from clotting. Hirudin works with vasodilator compounds to increase blood flow to an area and at the same time the anaesthetic compounds allow for painless attachment. Leeches have two "suckers one at each end. The caudal/ back end/ suction cup helps the leech to ambulate on dry surfaces and to attach to its host. The rostal /front end/ suction cup also contains the mouth with three sharp jaws that leave a Y-shape bite.
Frequently:
- mild pain during treatment / or tense /
- blood leakage from the bites place / for 6-8 hours/

Contraindications:
- Taking anticoagulants
- Hemophilia: One of the most of serious contraindication. The treatment is possible using acetylsalicylic acid if it is a combined treatment.
- Stomach Ulcers or Gastritis
It could inflamed the mucosal athropy. It is not recommended because of
the anticoagulant effect.
- Bleeding Diathesis, the most frequent nasal bleeding or other bodies of manifests.
Internal bleeding, Gastrointestinal
- Vomiting blood - Hematemesis
- Melaena
- Recta - Hematocesia
- Anemia, all kinds of anemia, if the Hematocrit is below 42%. It is not recommended couse bone marrow suppression or the haemoglobin concentration less than normal.
Iron deficiency anemia: 7 times more common in women
- Severely Weakened Immune System, mainly TBC, HIV, Transplants or during Chemotherapy
- Acute infectious diseases
- Severe chronic disorders, Dialysis, Heart Failure, Renal Failure, Cirrhosis of the liver, generalised edema, collagenosis, Haematopoietic failure
- Wound healing and difficulties, Severe leg ulcers
- Known allergy against the leech active ingredients or if there is a tendency of protein allergy. In case of inferior and insignificant allergic predisposition to continue the therapy under medical supervision while taking an antihistamine.
- Tendency to skin scarring
-Hypotension - low blood pressure
- Pregnancy or breast feeding
- Periods
- Before or after : Surgery, tooth extraction, radiotherapy
- Allergic skin infection, Acute dermatitis or if the treated skin is infected
The salivary glands secretion of medical leeches:
It contains more than 150 bioactive subtances and has anti-edematous, bacteriostatic, analgesic, resolving actions. Before Leech Therapy:
Clients shouldn't eat garlic 2 days before the treatment.
Please do not use any parfumed lotion, shower gels, medical ointments or oils on the day of your session.
Do not consume alcohol or tobbacoo or any kinda drugs a day before your session and on the day of the appointment
as well. Please let me know if you are taking any blood thinner medication /anticoagulant/
Note: any hard excercise, massage, acupressure, reflexology should be stop a day before the session and 2 days after it.
